WiFiSet Chat
Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains how WiFiSet Chat (“the App”) handles information when you use the Android application. By using the App, you agree to this Policy.
1. Who we are
WiFiSet Chat is provided by the WiFiSet team. Contact for privacy questions: chat@wifiset.app. Website: https://wifiset.app/.
2. What the App does
WiFiSet Chat lets nearby Android devices exchange messages, media, and files over a local Wi‑Fi network and, when needed, Bluetooth — without using the public internet for chat delivery. Communication is end-to-end encrypted between participating devices.
3. Information we do not collect for chat
For normal chat use, the App does not:
- Create a user account or ask for your phone number or email to chat
- Upload your chat history to our servers
- Sell your personal data
- Show third-party advertising networks inside chats
- Require cloud backup of your conversations
Because there is no WiFiSet chat cloud for messages, we cannot read your conversations on a central server. Purchase verification (Section 8) is separate from chat content and does not include message text, media, or contact lists.
4. Information stored on your device
The App stores data locally on your phone, which may include:
- Display name and optional profile photo you choose
- Device identity keys used for secure sessions
- Chat history, media, and files you send or receive
- Contacts and peer information discovered or paired nearby
- App settings (theme, language, notification sound, background mode, etc.)
- Optional local backups you create yourself
This data remains under your control on the device. Clearing app data, uninstalling the App, or deleting chats removes the local copies according to Android and the App’s delete actions. Deleting a message on your device does not delete it from other people’s devices.
5. Information shared with other users (peers)
When you use the App near others who also run WiFiSet Chat, devices may exchange the information needed to discover each other and communicate, such as:
- Your display name and optional avatar
- Device identifiers used by the App for peer discovery and sessions
- Messages, media, and files you choose to send
- Security verification data (for example QR codes or short safety codes)
This sharing happens directly between devices on the local network or Bluetooth link. Other users can see content you send them; please only message people and networks you trust.
6. Permissions
The App may ask for Android permissions only to provide its features:
- Nearby devices / local network — find and connect to peers on Wi‑Fi
- Bluetooth — optional nearby connectivity when Wi‑Fi is not shared
- Camera — QR pairing and capturing photos/videos you send
- Photos, media, and files — attach and save items you choose
- Notifications — alert you about new messages
- Foreground service / battery exemptions (optional) — if you enable background Wi‑Fi receiving so messages can arrive while the App is not open
- Boot completion (optional) — restart background receiving after device reboot if you enabled that mode
You can deny or revoke permissions in Android Settings. Some features will not work without the related permission.
7. Background mode
Background receiving over Wi‑Fi is optional and off by default. If you enable it, the App may keep a low-priority ongoing notification required by Android for foreground services, and may use more battery. You can turn it off at any time in Settings.
8. Purchases & license verification (WiFiSet Chat Pro)
Optional paid features (Pro) are sold as a one-time unlock through Google Play Billing. Payment card details are processed by Google, not by us. We do not receive your full credit card number. Google’s privacy policy applies to payment processing.
Subscription / purchase verification data
To activate Pro and prevent license abuse, the App verifies purchases with our backend (Google Firebase / Cloud Functions), in the same spirit as our other WiFiSet products. When you purchase or restore Pro, the following minimal data may be processed:
- Purchase token: provided by Google Play to confirm that the purchase is valid.
-
Anonymous device fingerprint: a one-way cryptographic hash
(SHA-256) derived from a stable on-device identifier (such as Android’s
app-scoped
ANDROID_ID). The raw identifier is not sent; only the hash is transmitted. This is not your biometric fingerprint (finger/face unlock), not IMEI, and not used for advertising. - Fallback installation identifier (if needed): a hashed Firebase Installation ID may be used when a stable platform id is unavailable (for example on some emulators).
- Basic device metadata: device model, major OS version, and app version — used only for support and abuse monitoring (for example “Samsung Galaxy · Android 15 · app 1.0.0”).
This data is collected solely for purchase verification and fair-use enforcement (a legitimate interest under applicable privacy laws). It is not sold, not used for ads, and not mixed with your chat contents. Chat messages, media, and local contact nicknames are never uploaded as part of this check.
9. Fair use & license policy
A WiFiSet Chat Pro lifetime license is issued for personal use and is subject to a fair-use device limit.
Device limit
- Each Pro license may be active on a maximum of 2 devices at the same time.
- A “device” means a unique physical phone or tablet on which the App is installed and the license has been verified.
- Sharing one license across many users or households is not allowed and may result in suspension of Pro access.
Restores & reinstalls
- Restoring purchases on an already registered device is supported through Google Play when verification succeeds.
- Reinstalling the App, clearing data, or replacing a phone may require a new verification. If you hit the 2-device limit after a device change, contact us and we can help reset registrations where appropriate.
Device registration for this limit uses the anonymous hashed fingerprint and related verification data described in Section 8.
Support for license / device resets: chat@wifiset.app.
10. Internet use
Chat delivery is designed to work offline on a local network. The App may still use the internet for purposes such as opening our website, sending feedback email you compose, rating the App on Google Play, completing a Play purchase, verifying or restoring a Pro license with Google Play / Firebase, and automatically sending anonymous crash reports (Section 10a) — when you choose those actions or when the platform requires them.
10a. Crash reporting & diagnostics (Firebase Crashlytics)
The App uses Firebase Crashlytics (Google LLC) to automatically detect and report crashes and non-fatal errors. This service helps us identify and fix bugs to improve stability for all users.
What Crashlytics collects
When a crash or error occurs, the following anonymous technical data may be sent to Google’s Crashlytics servers:
- Stack trace — the code location where the error happened
- Device model and OS version — e.g. “Samsung Galaxy · Android 15”
- App version and build number
- Timestamp of the event
-
Custom diagnostic keys we attach — limited to:
- Whether the user is on the Free or Pro plan (
is_pro_user: true/false) - The step where a billing or licensing error occurred (e.g.
iap_step: purchase_launch) - Network and storage context labels (no personal content)
- Whether the user is on the Free or Pro plan (
What Crashlytics does NOT collect
- Your messages, chat history, or media files
- Your display name, avatar, or contact list
- Your full device identifier, IP address, or location
- Any personally identifiable content from the chat
Crash data is collected in release (production) builds only. Debug builds used during development do not report to Crashlytics. Data is processed by Google under their Firebase Privacy Policy.
11. Children’s privacy
The App is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children through a WiFiSet account system, because the App does not use such accounts. If you believe a child has provided sensitive information through misuse of a device, contact us and we will help with guidance for local deletion.
12. Data retention and your choices
- Edit or clear your profile information in the App
- Delete conversations or clear local history in Settings
- Create or omit local backups
- Uninstall the App to remove its local data (subject to Android behavior)
- Disable Bluetooth, background mode, or notification permission at any time
- Contact us to request help with Pro device-registration resets within fair use
13. Security
Sessions are encrypted between devices. Local chat storage is protected with on-device encryption technology. Purchase credentials and verification results may be stored using platform secure storage. Device fingerprints are hashed before transmission so the original identifier cannot be recovered from the hash alone. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure; keep your device locked and verify contacts when possible (QR / safety numbers).
14. Third-party services
The App uses or may interact with the following external services:
- Google Play — app distribution and in-app purchases. Google Privacy Policy.
- Google Firebase (Cloud Functions & Firestore) — Pro license verification and device-limit enforcement (Section 8). Firebase Privacy Policy.
- Firebase Crashlytics — automatic crash and error reporting for app stability (Section 10a). Collects anonymous technical data only; no message content or personal chat data is included. Firebase Privacy Policy.
If you visit our website or contact us by email, normal web/email provider processing applies. We do not share verification or diagnostic data with advertisers or data brokers.
15. International users
Chat data is processed locally on devices you and your peers control, so its location follows those devices. Purchase-verification data may be processed on Google’s infrastructure in regions where Firebase / Play services operate. If you travel or change devices, your local chat copy moves with your phone unless you delete it or restore a backup you created.
16. Changes to this Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of the App after an update means you accept the revised Policy. Material changes may also be noted in the App or on our website.
